It has been almost 10 months to the day since Winnebago launched the Ekko, a brand new motorhome size motorhome with the space and capabilities of a larger motorhome. To say it was an instant hit would be an understatement. Since then, Winnebago has canceled one of Ekko’s two original floor plans (the one with the slide) and dragged its feet showing a pop top version to the audience. We’re not getting the sliding floor plan back, but this weekend at the Hershey RV Show in Pennsylvania, Winnebago finally revealed the pop supermodel.
As the official photos show, the Ekko sunroof is exactly like the standard model but with a sunroof that tilts to create additional sleeping space for two. The mezzanine bedroom measures 52 x 79 inches and its presence means that other options like the luggage rack and the outdoor kitchen are no longer available. The only modifications inside the RV are an opening in the roof and a ladder that collapses to climb up. The effect, however, is huge, as it doubles the sleeping capacity of the good-sized Ekko from two to four people. This means that instead of being a motorhome only for empty nests and DINKs, families with a few children can enjoy what the Ekko has to offer.
And he offers plenty. Based on the popular Ford Transit chassis, the Ekko comes with all-wheel drive and true all-season capability thanks to some serious insulation; a huge heated outdoor garage; and 50 gallon fresh and gray water tanks. Power comes from Ford’s proven twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 producing 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, and it is routed to the ground via an efficient 10-speed automatic transmission.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Ekko is its disappearing shower. The designers at Winnebago were forced to get creative to install a complete dry tub. So they took inspiration from Europe and developed a smart hinged wall system that gives you a large bathroom to get ready and do your business in and which quickly turns into a large shower.
Back to the pop top version. We asked Winnebago for pricing details, but none were available at this time. The company’s website still lists the price of the Ekko at $ 171,845 before options, and the pop top option directs buyers to their dealer for more pricing information.
