Microsoft has announced a new Windows 11 HDR Calibration app that can be downloaded for free by all users running the latest version of the operating system.
Released on the Microsoft Store, the HDR calibration app does what pretty much any other display calibration app does, so it can run three test patterns to possibly help improve the color accuracy and consistency.
Microsoft says the app also lets users adjust the color saturation of all content when the HDR setting is enabled.
“In some cases (especially with displays without HDR certification), displayed content is sometimes either brighter than the screen’s maximum supported brightness or darker than the minimum supported brightness,” notes the giant. software.
“This causes a ‘clipping’ effect that reduces detail in the highlights and shadows of a scene. Calibrating your monitor can improve your experience with HDR on Windows by resolving these issues! Additionally, if you wish So that your content looks more vivid when HDR is enabled, you can use the app’s Color Saturation menu to customize the appearance of colors on your screen.
It goes without saying that your display needs to support HDR, and to determine whether or not it does, simply head into the Settings app under System > Display > User HDR. “Not all GPUs support this feature. Please see application requirements here. If your GPU appears to support this feature, be aware that this change will depend on the characteristics of your display and on some screens it may be very subtle and difficult to notice,” Microsoft notes.
The app is already available for download for Windows 10 and 11 users, and according to Neowin, you don’t need to be running the latest version of the operating system to install it.
