Windows 11 File Explorer now lets you duplicate tabs in latest beta – Neowin

Microsoft is set to announce the rumored “AI Explorer” with its sophisticated AI-driven experiences, which, unfortunately, appear to require new hardware, notably from Qualcomm. Users of PCs with 16-core AMD Ryzen chips, 24-core Intel CPUs, and other “traditional” x86 processors will apparently have to contend with the current, not-so-AI-powered File Explorer. Luckily, the latter also gets some love from Microsoft.

The newly discovered (yet to be announced) improvements focus on tabs, an area that can surely benefit from some feature and performance improvements. Windows 11 build 22635.3566, which was released in the beta channel earlier this week, contains a feature ID that, after activation, allows you to duplicate a File Explorer tag. It’s not revolutionary by any means, but it’s welcome nonetheless.

Right-clicking on a File Explorer tab in the current stable release reveals three options: close tab, close all tabs on the right, and close other tabs. In build 22635.3566, there is a fourth option responsible for duplicating your current tab. Neat.

Those who want to try tab duplication in File Explorer should do the following:

  1. Download ViveTool from GitHub and unzip the files into a convenient, easy-to-find folder.
  2. Press Win + and select Terminal (administrator).
  3. Switch Windows Terminal to Command Prompt profile with the Ctrl+Shift+2 shortcut or by clicking the down arrow button at the top of the window.
  4. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD order. For example, if you placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.
  5. Type vivetool /activate /id:45262221,48433719 and press Enter.
  6. Restart your computer.

The current implementation is a bit jarring and lacks smooth animations, but at least it’s now much easier to have two identical File Explorer tabs. Hopefully, Microsoft will make more improvements in this area before officially revealing tab mirroring to the public.
