Word of a Baywatch the sequel dates back to just after the release of the first film. Beau Flynn, who produced the film, described some details about a planned sequel in an interview with Variety. Some of the writers had already started working on a story, and it appeared that deals were even in the works with some of the stars in the film. Flynn explained that the sequel will see the central cast in a location overseas. It was, however, the last public statement made on a Baywatch 2. While it’s never quite stated, the first film’s disappointing critical and financial performance is the most likely culprit for its prevention.
Judging by Dwayne’s filmography of “The Rock” Johnson alone, Baywatch 2 is far from being a priority for the artist. Currently, Johnson has seven films in the works, both in pre and post production. This would suggest that it is locked down for the foreseeable future.
However, all hope is not lost. Some fans remember Baywatch like maybe not a great movie but better than what has been described in the reviews that accompanied its release. Johnson himself has spoken in positive terms of Baywatch also, focusing on positive reception among some of its viewers. While the money and the lack of it made by the first film is the biggest obstacle to Baywatch 2, the original film has its share of fans, including Johnson. If ever a sequel is to be made, it will likely have to be the result of their enthusiasm to overcome what could otherwise be a significant risk at the box office.
