Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce will lead their team into a Super Bowl again tonight.
When the Kansas City Chiefs duo finally takes the field at Allegiant Stadium against the San Francisco 49ers, it will be their fifth Super Bowl appearance in five years.
During the game, Mahomes and Kelce will be among the few Kansas City players to wear the captain’s “C” patch on their uniforms.
The quarterback/tight end tandem, along with cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, defensive tackle Chris Jones, kicker Harrison Butker and punter Tommy Townsend, were selected as the Chiefs’ 2024 playoff captains.
Mahomes and Kelce’s emblem will be doubly special since their captain’s “C” patch will be gold.
The number of gold stars on the special patch, in team colors, represents the number of years a player has been named captain of a team.
If the player has been named captain for more than four years, the “C” on the patch is gold.
Mahomes and Kelce’s gold captain’s patch is seen on the left side of their Super Bowl LVIII jerseys, opposite the “NKH” patch that honors a team icon.
The Chiefs recently held a photo opportunity with the six captains elected in the playoffs and Kelce spoke about the “honor” of being named.
He also revealed that head coach Andy Reid usually changes team captains for each regular season game.
“Most of the time it’s a guy from the city we’re playing or a guy from the team we’ve played against, and he gives them a chance to take this team into battle,” Kelce said.
However, when it comes to the playoffs, Reid is holding a team vote.
“He lets the players vote on who are the captains and who are the guys that have emerged throughout the season, and who are going to lead us into battle for the rest of the season,” Kelce explained.
“It just means it’s a great honor to be able to be named captain, to be on that piece of paper that he hands out for the guys to choose from.
“I know every year I’ve been extremely grateful and there’s a lot of pride in my chest to be able to lead these guys there.”
Kelce, Mahomes and Townsend were team captains in last year’s Super Bowl when the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones, running back Jerick McKinnon and linebacker Nick Bolton were also named team captains for the 2023 playoffs.
In three games so far in the postseason, Mahomes has totaled 718 passing yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.
Kelce, meanwhile, had 23 catches for 262 yards and three touchdowns in the three games leading up to the “Big Game.”
One of the tight end’s touchdowns came in the first quarter of the AFC Championship Game at MT&T Bank Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens.
Kelce caught a 19-yard dart from Mahomes to record the game’s first points and put the Chiefs on track to a 17-10 road victory.
The Niners are now the only team stopping them from winning back-to-back Super Bowl titles and their third overall.
