Patrick Mahomes is different in more ways than one.
Tonight will be his fourth Super Bowl in five years as he leads the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
The Chiefs QB, a two-time MVP, is arguably the best player in the NFL today and certainly one of the most recognizable.
The quarterback stands out for his curly hair and the fact that he wears his helmet high on his head.
It’s certainly unique, and few other American football stars do this.
Why does Patrick Mahomes wear his helmet so high?
Mahomes wears his helmet so high on his head for several reasons.
One of these reasons has to do with security.
Since Mahomes is a quarterback, he is at high risk of receiving strong tackles that can cause unfortunate head injuries.
So the NFL star wears a helmet larger than the usual helmet, specially designed to protect against concussions.
A downside to the larger helmet, however, is the fact that it can be more of an obstruction.
And Mahomes has had issues in the past with his helmet.
The Kansas City Chiefs star complained that his helmet was slipping and obstructing his vision.
So, to solve this problem, he started wearing it higher on his head to ensure full protection, but he could also see and dictate the play from anywhere on the field.
It’s a subtle change, but it’s obviously helped his game, considering he’s now a two-time Super Bowl champion, winning both in recent years.
