By Diane Keaton wearing all his Annie Hall held both at the casting of Irish, the Oscars have been filled with flashbacks. I mean, it’s the Oscars, nothing new to report. But Billie Eilish, just 18, who has just completed an incredible sweep at the Grammys, is a notable exception – so how is she?
Judging by her reaction to Maya Rudolph and Kristin Wiig’s song tribute to costume design, Billie has questions. To be honest, so am I.
Wiig and Rudolph made their presentation with dazzling charm, but I don’t pretend to understand what I was watching when these two comic geniuses prefaced the announcement of the best costume design (awarded to Jacqueline Durran for Little woman) by encircling a compilation of songs fun to play in karaoke: “Thong Song” by Sisqo, “These boots are made for Walkin” by Nancy Sinatra, “Vogue” by Madonna, etc.
It was when they started riffing “Lady in Red” by Chris de Burgh that the camera turned to Eilish, looking completely confused, almost incredulous what she was looking at.
It’s like she said, “This is a musical. This one is not a musical … or is it? The clip quickly went viral, with spectators speculating that she was rude or did not know any of the songs. Her reaction to Eminem’s shocking comeback performance from “Lose Yourself”, who is only a year older than her, was also puzzled. Either she laughs at the elders … or simply for the duration of this endless fitness ceremony.
