Why did the release of the Huawei laptop in China anger US lawmakers? -Udaipur Kiran

US lawmakers are frustrated and critical of the Biden administration after Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei this week unveiled laptops powered by Intel AI chips.

Huawei introduced the MateBook of AI at Huawei.

Republican Elise Stefanik said on social media that the laptops proved the Commerce Department approved the shipments.

Stefanik wrote in an article how unacceptable this was.

Republican Michael McCall said such approvals should be halted and that the policy had not changed as promised, Reuters reported.

“Two years ago, we were told that Huawei’s license would be suspended. This policy does not appear to have changed,” McCall said.

The news agency cited sources saying the chips were shipped under existing licenses and were not subject to recent restrictions on shipping artificial intelligence chips to China.

US trade restrictions

In 2019, the United States placed Huawei on its trade sanctions list for violating sanctions against Iran. This prevents US suppliers from selling to Huawei without special permission.

One such license issued by the Trump administration allowed Intel to supply laptop processors to Huawei. While some were in favor of revoking the permit, many admitted that the permit expired this year and would not be renewed.
