On August 5, Heche was in a horrific car accident that left her with severe burns, according to reports. Heche crashed her car into a house causing a fire, suffered multiple burns and was eventually taken to hospital. The massive fire left DeGeneres’ ex-girlfriend badly burned, so much so that she had to be taken out on a stretcher.

Heche and DeGeneres’ relationship began in 1997 when the duo met at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 1997 and quickly became Hollywood’s most famous openly LGBTQ couple at the time. “I saw Ellen across a crowded room, knowing nothing at all except that I was just attracted to her,” Heche told Oprah. In 2018 on the Irish Goodbye podcast, Heche opened up about their past relationship. She said, “Ellen and I met on a Sunday night at the Vanity Fair party.”

In October 2020, during an episode of “Dancing With the Stars”, Heche revealed that dating the talk show host from 1997 to 2000 also had a major negative impact on her career. “I was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres for three and a half years and the stigma attached to that relationship was so severe that I was fired from my multi-million dollar image deal and did not work in a photo studio for 10 years,” she claimed, adding that meeting DeGeneres at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 1997 was “the night that changed my life forever.”
