The last 16 clashes between England and Senegal at the World Cup will be shown live on ITV… and that could be bad news for the Three Lions.
Some rather stark numbers have highlighted ITV’s terrible form when broadcasting England games – giving you more reason to tune in to talkSPORT radio commentary with Jim Proudfoot and Stuart Pearce instead!
In a microcosm, this 2022 World Cup saw England impress with a 6-2 win over Iran and 3-0 against Wales, but look utterly lifeless in a 0-0 draw against United States.
The first two matches were both shown on the BBC, while the lackluster draw was on ITV.
ITV have the television rights for England against Senegal at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday, and looking back even further makes for eerie reading.
Since 1998, England have played 31 World Cup matches, including 16 on the BBC and 15 on ITV.
During this period, the BBC posted 12 wins for a 75% win rate, while ITV showed just two, for a 13% win rate.
A deep dive shows that ITV have recorded six draws and seven defeats in this period, including the horrific 0-0 draw against Algeria in 2010, as well as the 2018 semi-final loss to Croatia .
Including the European Championships, things don’t get any better either, with Roy Hodgson’s horror show against Iceland in 2016 on ITV, as well as exits from Euro 2000 and Euro 2004.
There were some bright spots, however, with ITV broadcasting a rare penalty shootout victory for England when they beat Colombia at the last World Cup.
But you’d still better play it safe and tune into talkSPORT…
