Spurs fans, understandably, felt they got the much better end of the deal when it was announced they had signed Bryan Gil from Sevilla, with Erik Lamela moving the other way.
Lamela’s talent is indisputable. However, he was a game-changer for Tottenham quite often during his time in north London.
His move to La Liga therefore seemed logical for all parties, especially with Gil signing as part of the deal.
But at first it looks like Lamela is doing his best to make Spurs regret their decision to offload him.
The Argentinian has scored three goals in three substitute matches in the league.
And on Tuesday he made his Champions League debut for the club.
It turned out to be a remarkable tie in Spain. Four first-half penalties were awarded as Sevilla and Red Bull Salzburg drew 1-1. There was also a red card in the 50th minute for Youssef En-Nesyri.
Eight minutes later, Lamela was introduced. As Whoscored showed, he had five successful dribbles. Remarkably, it was more than any player who appeared.
During that time, he also made three tackles. Marcos Acuna was the only Sevilla player to handle more.
And the 29-year-old has been praised by the Spanish press for his display …
“What a player! He made his debut with a brace against Rayo and raised the level of the team in terms of delivery and quality, ”suggested Marca.
” Everything went well. From recoveries, to dribbling (what a delight) and to arrivals. He must be a starter.
Lamela shines in Sevilla, but Spurs still have the right to let him go despite Champions League display
Lamela made a brilliant start to life in Spain. But many Tottenham fans are unlikely to seriously question the decision to let him go.
Of course there were times he was exceptional in North London. But a succession of managers has achieved a similar level of consistency from Lamela.
So chances are he would have been nowhere near as impressive if he had stayed this summer.
It was a good time to let him go. And many will just be delighted to see him thrive in his new home.
