The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are officially underway, as is the race to top the medal count when the Games wrap up on August 8.
There are 206 countries competing in Tokyo with over 11,000 athletes representing them. While there are enough medals for each country to hypothetically return home – 309 in 33 sports – many countries will return home without any equipment. In fact, 72 countries recognized by the International Olympic Committee have never won an Olympic medal.
The United States is the historic leader in Olympic medals with almost 3,000, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany and France. In Tokyo, the United States should once again dominate the podium.
