Here’s where to watch and stream Baz Luhrmann’s new biopic Elvis, Best Picture nominee and Best Actor Oscar favorite.
The musical biographical film Elvis was one of the biggest films of 2022. The Baz Luhrmann-directed film follows the life and career of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler), the iconic musician and movie star commonly referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll “, told through the point of view of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Elvis made $287 million at the box office, making it the second-highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, behind Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). In 2023, Elvis became one of only 10 films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar – with an impressive eight nominations in total.
The film is a favorite for winning Best Actor for Austin Butler’s lead performance as Presley. Butler’s performance was universally acclaimed by critics and audiences alike—even those critical of the film as a whole—and is hailed as the biopic’s high point. Elvis is currently going through a theatrical rerun in the lead up to the Oscars in select theaters only. But the curious can head to the most important streaming platforms to check Elvis, as it’s currently available on HBO Max, Prime Video, Apple TV, and Hulu. A free trial of HBO Max is available through Prime Video, which offers a subscription to the channel as an add-on.

Who plays Elvis in the movie?
In the Elvis movie, Elvis is played by Austin Butler. Butler received his first Oscar nomination for the role and recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in the Drama category. Viewers may recognize Butler from his previous film role in Quentin Tarantino Once upon a time in Hollywood (2019), where he played Manson family cultist Tex Watson.
Butler is perhaps best known for his television roles – notably Hannah Montana, Zoey 101, And Carrie’s notebooks. Butler recently starred as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: second part, expected release end of 2023.
Does Austin Butler sing in Elvis?
The short answer is yes – Austin Butler sings Elvis using his own unedited voice. However, it is not Butler’s vocals for every song, and recordings of Elvis Presley are also used. The film’s composer, Elliott Wheeler, has confirmed that all Elvis songs up to 1968 – when Presley’s comeback special aired – are performed by Butler.
This means that songs from the first half of the film, such as “That’s Alright” and “Hound Dog” are performed by Butler. As of the 1968 special, it is only the voice of Elvis. However, director Baz Luhrmann has confirmed that at various unspecified points in the film, Austin Butler’s voice is digitally mixed with Elvis’s, using a stereo recording process called “stems”.
