How to make a homemade hand sanitizer

Suppose you know you are going out without direct access to soap and water, but you were unable to get your hands on a ready-to-use hand sanitizer. Experts, including Dr. Anne Marie Helmenstine (PhD in Biomedical Sciences) say it is possible to make your own “ hand sanitizer ” at home using isopropyl alcohol (known as the name rubbing alcohol) and aloe vera gel.

To make your own, simply mix 2/3 cup of 99% rubbing alcohol with 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel. You can add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to mask the smell of alcohol if you wish, but it is not essential. Then use a funnel to decant the mixture into a spray bottle or a container of liquid soap. Clearly label the bottle.

For your homemade hand sanitizer to work effectively, it must contain at least 60% alcohol by volume. But if you don’t include aloe vera gel, it’ll dry your hands quite severely, fairly quickly.

Does hand sanitizer protect against coronaviruses?

Because coronavirus is a new disease, the official medical line on it is unclear. The NHS website says, “We don’t know exactly how the coronavirus spreads from person to person” and that “similar viruses spread through droplets of cough”.

NHS advises using disinfectant hand gel only if soap and water are not available. Other recommendations include using your sleeve or a handkerchief to cover your mouth when you sneeze, putting the used handkerchiefs directly in a trash can and then washing your hands.

Also keep in mind that while hand sanitizing gels seem to be the surefire way to get your hands as clean as possible, they are not the magic solution you might assume. First, for hand sanitizer gel to effectively kill germs, it must contain at least 60% alcohol – to be safe, look for 60-95% alcohol concentration and avoid alcohol-free options .

There are also other things that can make alcohol gel or vodka less effective than you’d expect. The CDC warns that if your hands are very dirty or greasy, this can prevent hand sanitizers from working properly. You should also make sure that you are using enough gel and that you are not wiping off the gel until it is properly dry. Seriously, washing your hands is easier.

While hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on your hands, they don’t kill all types of germs. For certain types of germs – including noroviruses – soap and water are more effective, according to the CDC.

What should I do if I can’t find a hand sanitizer?

You were therefore unable to obtain a hand sanitizer. Do not worry. It’s time to turn to good soap and old-fashioned water. To help you avoid catching or spreading a coronavirus, the NHS recommends washing your hands regularly with soap and water, following official handwashing steps, including when you return home or get to work.

You can get hand soap at your local supermarket, but if that’s not possible, you can also order online – go to Waitrose, Boots, Superdrug, or any other online store.

Once you have your soap, it’s time to perfect your hand washing technique. It is recommended to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Above, the official NHS video showing you how to wash your hands properly.

How can I manage self-isolation?

The UK has put in place a lockout period, and in general, everyone is advised to distance themselves socially right now. Fortunately, in today’s connected world, movies and television can come to you from around the world.
