15 years after the release of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, we revisit the 2005 interview with director Doug Liman where he spilled the beans from working with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
It has been 15 years since the controversial Mr. and Mrs. Smith was released. While the chemistry of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the film was the subject of town talk at the time, Mr. and Mrs. Smith were also the turning point in the marriage of Jennifer Aniston and Brad. With the controversies surrounding the film, director Doug Liman had already opened up on the sex scene that was talked about a lot and highlighted the atmosphere on the sets.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2005, Liman revealed that there were a few cases on the set where Angie managed to leave Brad and Doug were shocked by Angelina’s comments on the sets. The director had admitted that the filming of the scorching scenes was embarrassing for him because he came from a “relatively tense family” when he was further asked if his co-stars were as embarrassing as for him.
It was then that Doug replied, “They were quite comfortable with this. I mean, I think Brad and I were more uncomfortable, because she is such a force to be reckoned with. Sometimes she made a comment and we were like, Whoa! ” Sharing an example, he explained that Angelina liked to be “sexually shocking”. Angie liked being the least embarrassed person, added the director.
During one of the stage discussions, the director revealed that he “had suggested [she should perform] the most graphic and craziest sexual act I can imagine [for the love scene]. Just to try to shock her. 10 steps beyond anything I would consider doing in my own life. She starts to frown and I say to myself: Oh, never heard of that one? I guess Bunny is not immune! And it’s like, no, actually, I’m just trying to find out if I did. ”
