Google Messages comes pre-configured with a number of handy features.

Some of them are notifications, pinch to zoom, current country, suggested actions, smart reply, view voicemail transcripts, view messages by category, and much more.

However, some pretty important features are not enabled by default.

These features are collectively referred to as chat features and include:

  • Send read receipts.

  • Show input indicators.

  • Automatically resend as text if a message cannot be sent.

  • Automatically download files you receive via mobile data.

  • Automatic downloading of files while roaming.

For some, read receipts and keystroke indicators alone are reason enough to enable the feature. The other options may not apply to you or you may not want the files downloaded automatically.

For those who really want read receipts and to be able to see when someone is typing, you’ll definitely want to enable this feature.

However, there is one thing to understand. This is because not all carriers support this feature. If you find the option is not available on your device, it means your carrier does not support chat options.

The only thing you will need for this is a device running an updated version of Android. Most devices sold in the past two years should include an operating system version that includes the feature.

That’s all you need. Let’s activate it.

Swipe up on your home screen to show the app drawer. Locate and tap the message launcher to open the app.

On the main Messages page, tap your profile icon, then tap Messages settings.

From the Messages settings page, tap Chat Features at the top, and on the resulting page, tap the ON/OFF slider until it’s in the ON position.

A pop-up window will appear asking you to verify activation. Tap Yes, I accept to enable the feature. After enabling the feature, you will see a button labeled Verify Number. You have nothing to do.

You can now enable or disable any of the available features that you want. After customizing the chat features, you can exit the messaging settings page and enjoy a much improved messaging experience.

You’ve now made Android Messages a more robust app that will keep you better informed and even let those who’ve texted you know that you’ve read their missives.
