Wesley Fofana enjoyed rapture and huge disappointment in quick succession in Chelsea’s Champions League clash against AC Milan.

The French defender, who joined the Blues from Leicester in a £70m deal this summer, scored his first goal for his new club to break the deadlock at Stamford Bridge.

Thiago Silva had a header from a corner saved by Ciprian Tatarusanu a scramble into the box followed by Fofana fending off the loose ball from close range in the 24th minute.

But just 14 minutes later, Fofana’s joy turned to despair as he limped off with a worrying knee injury.

It happened in rather innocuous circumstances as Fofana landed awkwardly following a fair challenge from Milan midfielder Rafael Leao.

Fofana left the pitch in tears as he was duly replaced by Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea were good value for their lead, with Silva saving a number of efforts, while Raheem Sterling missed the chance to pull the trigger when he played on goal. Mason Mount was also disallowed a goal for offside.

However, they were nearly caught in the dying moments of the first half as Kepa Arrizabalaga denied Charles De Ketelaere before Rade Krunic skied the rebound with the gaping goal.
