What movie inspired Alan Wake 2?
Alan wakes up 2 will have a split storyline. One would revolve around Alan, the game’s protagonist, and the other around Saga, an FBI agent. The game will require them to use their intelligence to get out of a nightmarish situation. Alan will find himself in a grave maze of his own creation, while Saga will pursue him to reach the bottom of a series of ritual murders.
“One of the first things that came to mind when we were thinking about creating the concept of an FBI agent coming with his partner to investigate these murders was the first season of True Detective.” Rowley reveals to IGN. The game director adds: “The kind of dynamic between the two detectives there and the way they work together to solve this case was something very compelling for us. And then obviously, stylistically, again, it has a lot of ritual elements that we could very well draw on.
Molly Maloney, the lead narrative designer at Remedy, talks about the story progression of Alan Wake 2. She told IGN: “Switching to The Overlap as Saga when you go through the forest and that first Overlap with the intense reds and the blending of worlds, it felt like a deleted scene from the first season of True Detective to me.”

Lead narrative designer Molly Maloney had a lot to say about Remedy’s next title. She thought Alan Wake 2 would be a great game because players would get to experience the detective’s point of view. She told IGN: “A really great detective mystery, in my opinion, is when you can put yourself in the detective’s shoes and pay close attention to things, look at the connections and put it all together.”
She went further to explain her opinion, “The truly terrible thing, in my opinion, is when you wish you could look away, but you can’t. It’s this balance that I don’t want to examine, but I have to.
