While he made 38 appearances during his time with the Gunners, only 15 of those came in the Premier League as Martinez struggled to truly establish himself.

This led to a series of loan spells with Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham, Wolves, Getafe and Reading where he showed his ability, before moving to Aston Villa in 2020.

After leaving for Villa Park, it didn’t take long for Martinez to establish himself in the Argentina national team, with the 30-year-old now their first-choice keeper.

After helping Argentina to Copa America glory in 2021 and playing every minute of their journey to Sunday’s World Cup final, it’s clear Martinez is one of the best goalkeepers on the planet. , which Wenger says is a testament to his ability to fight his way to the top.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Wenger said: “I’m very happy for him.

“We were aware of his immense qualities. He was determined and had a desire to learn and a great passion for the game.
