Remember that strange high-performance sedan prototype spotted a few months ago? Well, it has been spotted again, although recent sighting has done little to identify the odd model, which we suspect is a Fiat. He continues to wear a thick plastic covering that goes beyond the usual amount of concealment. The thick black coating completely masks the shape, with only parts of the car visible.
All signs indicate that this is a new Fiat model, although its true identity remains a mystery. Previous Fiat test vehicles wore a similar plastic coating designed to mask the shape of the vehicle, such as the Fiat Mobi test vehicle spotted in 2019. The vehicle’s thick coating and its unknown status opens a wide scope for speculation on what Fiat does. We previously suggested that it could be a taller version of the Tipo sedan that the company revealed last October. There are similarities between the Tipo and the design of the front of the test vehicle.
However, there’s a good chance it will be something else entirely, depending on how far along it’s development. If it’s in the early stages, it’s likely the sheet metal underneath could change drastically before the camouflage falls off. This could be a first prototype for a coupe-type SUV like the Fiat Fastback Concept which debuted in 2018. Our spy photographers suggest that it could be given the Toro Coupé name, and that it could hit the market in 2022, but don’t expect it to be the United States. It will be a vehicle for Brazil and South America.
If it’s the Toro Coupé, it’ll likely get an engine lineup, with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder serving as the entry-level offering. It could also sport the optional 1.3-liter turbocharged engine revealed in the 2022 Fiat Toro, which produces 185 horsepower (137 kilowatts). It will be necessary to wait until the test vehicle loses its plastic coating to understand what the manufacturer is developing. Until then, Fiat’s square plastic liner will do its job well in keeping the car a mystery.
