Amad Diallo has asked Sunderland fans to change their chant about him ahead of their Millwall clash because he contained racial stereotypes.
But some Stadium of Light supporters ignored his appeal as they continued to chant about his manhood on Saturday.
Diallo has become a favorite of Wearside fans since joining the Black Cats on a season-long loan from Manchester United.
After a slow start to life in the second tier of English football, he has found his shooting boots lately after scoring in four of his last six games – including today’s 3-0 win over the Lions .
As a show of appreciation to the 20-year-old Ivory Coast winger, fans created his own chant.
But Diallo took slight offense to the song by addressing the supporters with a video on social media.
He asked fans to stop singing the song in a video shared on Sunderland’s Twitter account as he seeks to maintain his good form without the chant ringing around the floor.
Diallo said: “Sunderland fans, I’ve had an amazing time so far and I love your energy.
“And hearing you sing my name is amazing. But we must be respectful.
“Let’s change the song, keep the noise and move forward together.
Diallo will be hoping his dazzling performances will prevail under Erik ten Hag, having failed to win when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick were in charge.
There have even been rumors that United may be looking to recall him from loan in January – much to the chagrin of Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray.
Speaking ahead of the rumor mill win over Millwall, he remarked: “We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”
Before adding: “If he were to go back, then I’m not sure he would go back to play, and surely at the age the boy is, he needs to play.
“He does it here, and I think it’s a great way for him to show his talent.
“He helps our team succeed and he shows his talent at Man United.
“I know he likes it – you can tell by the smile on his face every day now, as opposed to a month ago when he was quite a shy and introverted individual.
“Now his talent is thriving and he’s having fun, and I’m sure he’s in no rush to go back.”
