The coronavirus has claimed the season of a high school winter sport even before the season begins.
Waterford School has canceled basketball for boys and girls due to indoor sport and the environment where COVID-19 is known to spread more easily. The growing number of coronavirus cases in Utah was also a factor in the decision.
“Waterford School’s top priority is to remain safely open to learning on campus,” Waterford School Principal Andrew Menke said in a statement to the Salt Lake Tribune. The protocols that have been put in place this year allow our in-person model to be successful are based on key health and safety principles, two of which are distance and masking.
“Given the nature of a higher risk indoor sport, like basketball, as well as the growing number of positive COVID cases statewide, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our programs. basketball this year for the health and safety of our community.
Waterford informed the Utah High School Activities Association of its decision to cancel basketball seasons on Thursday afternoon, a UHSAA official told The Tribune.
Waterford, who participates in 2A, had already canceled several women’s volleyball games this season. This team has not played a game since September 15, according to their schedule on MaxPreps.
