Godzilla comes into the picture with a splash in this energetic moment from the latest addition to the MonsterVerse franchise.
Kong is transported from Skull Island by boat and meets the ocean with a very restless Godzilla. Some of the action in the sequence borrows from both “Jaws” and “Die Hard,” and director Adam Wingard has said he wants to take a look at the show.
“That’s why you make these films,” he says as he recounts the sequence. “When you get to those times, it’s worth it, because it’s basically like playing with CGI toys.”
But these are not just theatrical effects. The action comes and goes between what happens with the humans on the ship and what happens in the water with the creatures. Wingard wanted to parallel specific movements to give an impression of anchoring. So he went from a photo of Godzilla swimming to one of the characters Nathan (Alexander Skarsgard) doing the same, or a close-up of Kong roaring to one of Nathan’s screams.
“It’s like you’re dealing with characters 6 feet and under, and 300 feet and up,” he said, “so how do you relate them? You try to find those little visual clues that subconsciously tie the two worlds together.
