Alessia Cara arrives on the late night tour to promote her new single, a cover of “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms, and stopped by Tonight’s Show with Jimmy Fallon Monday night (November 29) to discuss the holiday classic and of course to play a game with the host.
Cara joined Fallon in a game called Musical Genre Challenge, which sees the duo going back and forth singing popular tracks and breathing new life into them with different genre styles. Fallon kicked off with BTS’s “Butter” sung in the style of an 80s new wave track, while Cara delivered a 60s-inspired folk version of Doja Cat and “Kiss Me More” by SZA. After Fallon gave the iconic Spider Man A touch of The Beatles’ theme song (British Invasion was the genre), Cara was tasked with delivering a jazz and swing rendition of Justin Bieber and of “Stay” by The Kid LAROI, the highlight of the game.
Later in Cara’s interview segment schedule, she spoke with Fallon about why she chose to cover “Jingle Bell Rock” instead of another classic Christmas tune. “I tend to gravitate towards super melancholy songs and Christmas carols tend to be a little sad,” the singer said. “But this one felt like he was really cheerful and happy and that’s kind of what we all need. But also the real reason, secretly, I wanted to do it because I wanted to sing the line” Giddy up, jingle-horse “because it makes me laugh.
The Billboard Holiday 100, which recently returned for 2021, finds the original version of “Jingle Bell Rock” at # 3. The 25-year-old has released her third studio album, Waiting for, back in September.
