FIFA has confirmed Wales fans can wear Rainbow Wall caps for Friday’s clash against Iran.
The rainbow bucket hat was designed by LGBTQ+ football organization The Rainbow Wall to promote equality and inclusion in football.
But with homosexuality being illegal in Qatar, fans had their hats confiscated when they tried to enter their opener against the United States – with even a former Wales player facing the issue .
Similarly, FIFA also warned nations wishing to wear the One Love rainbow armband that they would receive an in-game punishment, leading countries to drop the idea.
But while there was no U-turn on allowing the armband to be worn in support of LGBTQ+ rights, FIFA and Qatar have now confirmed that fans can wear rainbow hats in the stages.
In a statement on Twitter, FA Wales wrote: “In response to FAW, FIFA has confirmed that fans with Rainbow Wall bucket hats and rainbow flags will be allowed into the stadium to @cymrugame against Iran on Friday.
“All World Cup venues have been contacted and urged to follow agreed rules and regulations.”
It is understood FIFA reminded the tournament hosts of their pre-tournament assurances that everyone was welcome and that rainbow flags would be permitted on Tuesday.
On top of that, FIFA were also concerned about reports that fans were confronted by security for bringing the hats to the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
