VW to invest $485 million in Wolfsburg for ID.3 facelift and production of new SUV

Volkswagen is working on a revised version of the ID.3. The company calls it the New ID.3 but it’s actually a facelift for the electric hatch with comprehensive hardware and software improvements. In order to secure the production of the refreshed ID.3 – and not only – Volkswagen has just announced a huge investment in its main plant in Wolfsburg.

By early 2025, the German automaker will invest around 460 million euros in the Wolfsburg plant, a figure that currently equates to around 485 dollars at the current exchange rate. The facelifted ID.3 will start rolling off the Wolfsburg assembly lines from 2023 initially in what VW describes as partial production. Full-rate manufacturing is expected to start next year and ramp-up should be complete by mid-decade.

In its official press release for the media, Volkswagen also mentions a new electric SUV. It will also be produced at the company’s Wolfsburg factory and will be based on an updated version of the MEB platform called MEB+. We don’t know much about it, but based on VW’s words, we think it will position itself in the compact segment.

“This is the largest vehicle segment in the world, this is where our popular Tiguan is located. The new model would ideally complement our best-selling ID.4 and ID.5. This is how we intend to further expand our market position and provide our customers with the high-quality vehicles they expect from us,” says Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.

The MEB+ architecture mentioned above, Volkswagen promises, will deliver faster charging speeds and longer ranges on a single charge. The battery cells that will be used in the future e-SUV and other models will be produced at the company’s Salzgitter plant. We will soon have a separate article detailing the new MEB+ platform which is expected to have a range of up to 435 miles.

Going back to Wolfsburg’s investment, Volkswagen says it will also produce the Trinity vehicle, which will be based on the so-called Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). As a reminder, Volkswagen will delay the launch of this electric machine until the end of the decade due to software problems.
