Vitello compares Vols’ No. 1 ranking to Leonardo DiCaprio – WBIR.com

The Vols head coach said after the game that Tennessee’s ranking doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of a national title race.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello isn’t putting too much stock in the Vols’ No. 1 ranking this week.

“It’s voted on by very smart people who do their research, but it’s still voted on,” Vitello said after the Vols’ 6-3 win over Queens University on Tuesday night.

Tennessee earned a No. 1 ranking for just the second time in program history this week after beating Florida in a best-of-three series last weekend, and also because the previous top two, Texas A&M and Arkansas, both lost the conference series.

“We talked about Leonardo DiCaprio,” Vitello said. “How’s that for his Oscar situation? It’s not fair, in my opinion.”

Vitello made the comparison to the acclaimed performer to say the team is not defined by voted accolades, but rather by being a great team with national championship goals.

DiCaprio is widely considered one of the best actors of his generation, although he has only won one Academy Award, which is also a voted award. He has been nominated for a total of six Academy Awards throughout his storied career.

“It’s just my opinion, but he’s doing great. He’s doing a good job,” Vitello said. “I’m pretty sure we would all enjoy spending time with this guy. I know you and I aren’t invited.”

The Vols will take their first seed on the road against their biggest rivals when Tennessee begins a conference series against Vanderbilt beginning Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m.
