DALLAS – About two hours before a 4-year-old boy was found dead on a Dallas street, a man lifted the sleeping boy from his bed and took him away, court documents say, citing surveillance footage at home.
The boy, who authorities identified as Cash Gernon on Monday, was in the care of Cash’s father’s girlfriend, police said. The girlfriend, who said Cash’s father had been away since March, identified the person who picked up Cash from his bed at 5 a.m. on Saturday as Darriynn Brown, 18, police said.

A police detective watched home surveillance video with his girlfriend, which identified Brown as the man who took the boy from his crib, according to the detective’s arrest affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News . The affidavit does not detail Brown’s relationship with Cash’s family and offers no explanation for Brown taking Cash.
Brown is being held for kidnapping and burglary.
The girlfriend called the police shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday to tell them that Cash was missing. Meanwhile, police found the boy dead at around 6:50 a.m., about half a mile from his home.
Deputy Police Chief Albert Martinez said it appeared the child had suffered a violent death and that a “sharp weapon” had been used.

Brown’s bond is set at $ 1.5 million. His lawyer, Robbie McClung, said on Monday that she had yet to meet him and therefore could not comment.
Authorities said additional charges were expected once forensic evidence was reviewed.
Additionally, Dallas Police said Cash’s mother was unaware he and her twin brother were in their father’s girlfriend and the mother was looking for her sons. Police say Cash’s twin is now with his mother.
Brown was arrested on April 27 on a misdemeanor charge of escaping arrest in a case that is still ongoing. According to court documents relating to this charge, he lives with his parents 800 meters from where the boy’s body was found. Neighbors said Brown was known to walk the area.
