High-resolution aerial imagery and property damage assessment will help insurers, government agencies and emergency officials quickly sort out damaged areas to improve their response after the catastrophic hurricane in Florida.
CENTENNIAL, Colo., October 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Vexcel Data Program, the world’s largest aerial imagery program, has collected high-resolution aerial imagery of buildings and properties impacted by Hurricane Ian. The unprecedented level of destruction and scale of this event means that thousands of homes, buildings and other structures are destroyed or have suffered heavy damage.
Vexcel, on behalf of its partner the Geospatial Insurance Consortium (GIC), activated a comprehensive response to Hurricane Ian by deploying multiple fixed-wing aircraft to collect super-detailed imagery at 7.5-10cm resolution. These images are captured with Vexcel’s industry-leading UltraCam sensors, then put through its world-class processing pipeline and delivered within 24 hours of collection.
Orthomosic and oblique aerial images are released, providing multiple views of damaged areas in Florida.
Additionally, Vexcel and GIC will provide property-level damage assessments by applying machine learning to its aerial imagery. The damage assessment includes an overall post-disaster score, approximate FEMA rating, roof damage analysis, and several pre-disaster attributes (roof material, floor area, roof shape) for each residential building.
With these aerial images and data analytics, users can:
- Better manage and adapt responses to highly impacted customers
- Proactively identify policyholders whose property is damaged and begin the claims process immediately
- Deploy resources i.e. field experts, utilities and emergency managers more efficiently and safely with detailed information
- Identify key learnings to consolidate underwriting and risk policies for future events
Imagery is available in Vexcel’s web viewer, partner platforms, and through APIs and Image Services for ArcGIS.
Free access to emergency managers
Since 2017, Vexcel and GIC have provided their aerial disaster images free of charge to first responders and emergency managers. Disaster teams can request access at: https://gic.org/disaster-response/
