The former world champion also refrained from saying that the Haas driver is the ideal candidate for the job, or even that Aston Martin would be the ideal next career step for Schumacher.

On Thursday, Vettel announced his decision to retire from F1 at the end of the season, immediately sparking speculation over who could get his seat.

Vettel announced his retirement from F1 on Thursday, immediately sparking speculation over who could get his seat.

Aston Martin reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg is an obvious candidate, alongside drivers out of contract at the end of this season such as Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon and Schumacher.

Vettel has long had an interest in Schumacher’s career, the same way Mick’s father, Michael, tried to help Vettel when he became a star in the karting scene.

Asked by Autosport if he considers young Schumacher a potential successor, Vettel admitted his conversation with team owner Lawrence Stroll about his retirement plans covered the subject of who could take his seat.

“Obviously I spoke to Lawrence yesterday and told him I wasn’t going to continue,” Vettel said.

“We had a very, very brief conversation about what could be next.

“I have my opinion. I mean, I have a very high opinion of Mick. I am obviously not completely objective, because I am very close to him. But I think he’s a great driver.

“And he’s a learner, he continues to learn when others slow down or stop progressing. He therefore has qualities, but he is also still very young and does not have much experience.

“So I don’t know, it’s not my decision. If asked, I will give my opinion and I won’t hold back, but in the end the team has to make that decision.”

Reacting to Vettel’s departure on Thursday, Schumacher said his compatriot would “leave a huge hole in the sport”.

But when later told of Vettel’s support for him, Schumacher played down any possible interest in the Aston Martin seat, suggesting he focus on the present.

“Well, you know, obviously I think there’s still a lot to do here,” he said.

“So that’s where my focus is at the moment. And, you know, what the future holds, we’ll see.

“I never say never. But, you know, obviously my focus is Budapest right now with Haas.”
