The Dallas Cowboys can start rookie Tyler Smith at left tackle following Tyron Smith’s injury, but that’s not stopping the club from looking for more depth at the position. After narrowing the roster to 53 players on Tuesday, Dallas welcomes veteran offensive tackle Jason Peters on a free agent visit, according to ESPN. Dallas has entered into negotiations with Peters, who has already undergone a physical and had a productive meeting with team officials on Friday, speak Dallas Morning News. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was also would be present in the meeting.

Peters spent the 2021 season in Chicago as a member of the Bears and started in his 15 games played for the franchise. Prior to that, he played the previous 11 seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles where he was named to seven Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro four times.

However, the 40-year-old is a bit far from his prime, so Dallas would hardly get that level of player if they agreed to a deal. If Peters signs with the Cowboys — or any team for that matter — he would become the second-oldest player in the NFL after Tom Brady.

Again, Tyler Smith appears to be the man chosen to be Dallas’ left tackle to start the year after Tyron suffered an avulsion fracture of his knee and is out until at least December. Initially, the rookie first-round pick was expected to start at left guard and become the possible left tackle of the future. Jerry Jones confirmed this week that it’s ‘safe to say’ he will now be pushed to left tackle to start his career. That said, it’s possible that an addition from Peters could keep Smith on that initial trajectory.

Regardless of how that plays out, Dallas is expected to start the season with three new starters along the offensive line with center Tyler Biadasz and All-Pro right guard Zack Martin as the only survivors.
