For the eighth time in its history, Olympique Lyonnais is European champion! Lyon won the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League on Saturday May 21, beating 2021 champions Barcelona 3-1 at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy. Lindsey Horan and Catarina Macairewho both played the full 90 minutes for Lyon in the action-packed final, became the fourth and fifth Americans to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League, joining Alex Morgan, who won the title in 2017 with Lyon, and Ali Krieger and Gina Lewandowski, who lifted the trophy with FFC Frankfurt in 2008. Macario made even more history by scoring a tap-in at the far post in the 33rd minute, becoming the first American – male or female – to score in a Champions League final. It was Macario’s ninth goal in the 2021-22 Champions League campaign and eighth in the tournament’s main stage, good for third among all goalscorers this season.

Horan and Macario will have the chance to add another trophy on Sunday, May 29, when Lyon take on rivals Paris Saint-Germain on the penultimate matchday of the Women’s Ligue 1 season. OL top the table and are five points ahead of PSG with just two games to play.
In the NWSL, San Diego Wave FC’s three-game winning streak early in the season ended Wednesday night against Racing Louisville FC, 1-0, at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville. Emilie Renard and Jaelin Howell both played the full 90 minutes for the hosts, who earned their first victory of the 2022 NWSL regular season. The Wave bounced back quickly with a 1-0 win over North Carolina Courage on Sunday, May 22, to maintain their lead atop the standings. Morgan scored his league-leading sixth goal of the season in the 41st minute, penetrating behind Courage’s defense and scoring a left-footed finish past Courage’s keeper Casey Murphy for the sole score of the game.

Murphy, who recorded two clean sheets for the USWNT in the 2022 SheBelieves Cup before being sidelined by injury, made his season debut for the Courage on Wednesday, recording a pair of saves in the 2-1 loss of North Carolina against Orlando Pride.
Angel City FC have won back-to-back games to stay second in the league standings after a 1-0 win over Kansas City Current on Saturday night. The only goal of the game came in the 70sand minute when Christen press did well to keep the ball in play for Angel City and played a cross in the area that deflected off the KC defender and into the net for an own goal.
Racing Louisville recorded its second straight win with a 1-0 road victory over NJ/NY Gotham FC on Sunday, extending its unbeaten streak to four straight games.
Portland Thorns FC went three unbeaten at the start of the season, taking on the Washington Spirit to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Providence Park. Sophie Smith gave Portland the lead in 57and minute, rushing down the right wing and finishing with his right foot for his second goal of the regular season.

Just six minutes later, the defending NWSL Golden Boot winner Ashley Hatch scored the tying goal for Washington, getting a stolen ball in the box and heading home her second goal of the regular season.

Portland’s undefeated start came to an end on Saturday as they fell to the visiting Houston Dash, 2-0, while the Spirit took another point on the road on Sunday, taking on OL Reign for a scoreless draw.
There was no shortage of offensive firepower in the final game of the weekend which saw the Chicago Red Stars beat the Orlando Pride, 4-2. Shelved for several weeks under concussion protocol, Mallory Pugh returned to the pitch for the Red Stars and made her impact felt almost immediately. After coming on as a substitute at halftime, Pugh picked up an assist on Chicago’s goal in 54and minute then added his own goals in the 64and and 86and. Pugh’s first goal of the game came from the top of the box, creating space herself before ripping a low right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
