TOKYO – US golfer Xander Sc Chaudele won the Olympic men’s individual stroke play competition on Sunday. ScHotele sank key putts towards the end of the final round as Japan’s top golfer faded from the medal race.
The 27-year-old won what he called the biggest victory of his career with two pressure putts. On the 17th green, he sank a six-foot birdie to break the tie with Rory Sabbatini, representing Slovakia. On the final green, ScHotele sank a 4-foot putt to give him a one-stroke victory over Sabbatini.
Germany-born ScHotele’s father dreamed of being an Olympic decathlete, but was injured in a car accident when he was young and never realized his dream. After winning on Sunday, Alex said he was happy to hand the gold to his father.
Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama was close to the lead but couldn’t deliver a medal to his golf-mad nation after missing several key putts down the home stretch. Taiwan’s CT Pan won bronze.
