LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A year after Title IX paved the way for women’s sports, the University of Kentucky made its women’s club team an official varsity team.

Carolyn Mindel was part of that first team.

“Back then we loved playing basketball,” Mindel said. “There weren’t a lot of opportunities, so when you got a chance to play, you played.”

It was people like Mindel who paved the way for Stacey Reed Sheppard to make history.

“They paved the way for us,” Reed Sheppard said. “What little we had, they had even less. It’s really cool to listen to them and see how excited they are for this year’s men’s basketball team and how proud they are of Reed. It’s a family feeling with everyone coming together to cheer each other on.

But it’s not just those who came before them who inspire the elders.

“My experience here when we beat Tennessee to have 13,000 fans here and now have a constituency in all of women’s basketball,” Jenny Pfeiffer said. “It’s amazing, I wish I had this many years ago. Seeing growth is all I want for my daughter.

With 50 years of hindsight, many young girls look to the women who have walked and will continue to walk Rupp’s field.
