HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii Men’s Basketball Team have announced their 2021-22 schedule with their season opening on November 10 with the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic. UH will play nearly a dozen non-conference contests, including a trio of preseason tournaments, before starting its 20-game Big West Conference roster with a return to a traditional round-trip schedule. In total, UH will play 17 home games at the Stan Sheriff Center’s SimpliFi Arena, including seven in non-conference action.
A welcome feedback: Due to COVID, last year’s basketball schedule was devoid of two major preseason tournaments for UH – the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic … both tournaments return this year to their normal dates… UH will kick off the year with the 56th edition. Rainbow Classic, Nov 10, 11 and 13… .UH Hilo, Northern Colorado and the Pacific join UH in the round robin realm… .the ‘Bows will also be hosting the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic during the Christmas holidays (Dec 22, 23 & 25)… the previously announced field includes BYU, Liberty, Northern Iowa, Southern Florida, Stanford and Wyoming, and UH’s first-round opponent , Vanderbilt.
Long live Las Vegas: The ‘Bows will be spending Thanksgiving week at the Las Vegas Classic… UH will face Illinois-Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, November 25 and face San Diego or South Alabama on Friday November 26… the tournament will take place at the Orleans Arena… it will be UH’s first pre-season continental tournament since the 2018 Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, Calif., which was also a Thanksgiving tournament… UH and San Diego could meet a year after their failed Rainbow Classic 2020 matchup in Honolulu.
Run it backwards: State rivals UH Hilo and Hawai’i Pacific are back on the program… last year the two schools were UH’s only non-conference opponents… UH will face UH Hilo for the 13th time in the regular season and the ninth time in the past 11 years… UH will host HPU in the regular season for the fourth time in the past seven years.
Enemies for the first time and long lost: The Rainbow Warriors will face Illinois-Chicago (out of the Horizon League) for the first time since 1990 when they met in the Las Vegas Classic… the ‘Bows could face South Alabama the next day, a school they didn’t. not faced since 1973… UH and Vanderbilt will meet for the first time in 31 years in a first round clash of the Diamond Head Classic… the teams met for the last time in 1990… UH will have their first meeting with new conference member Big West UC San Diego (Jan. 15 and Feb. 17)… teams were originally scheduled to hold their first meeting last February in San Diego before these contests were canceled.
Californian dream: UH’s only (real) non-conference road game will take place on November 30 in Santa Clara (WCC)… the teams were scheduled to play last December in California before this meeting was canceled… this will be the seventh visit of all UH weather in Santa Clara. with the last one coming in 2006… the 11 (real) UH regular season road games will be in California, 10 of which will be in the Big West.
Normality of the Great West: The Big West will revert to a traditional schedule, as UH will face every Big West team at home and away … UH will open the home conference roster with games against UC Davis (December 30) and UC Riverside (January 1) )… The ‘Bows will conclude the regular season on the road with games at UC Santa Barbara (March 3) and CSUN (March 5)… UH has completed the regular season on the road in each of the past seven seasons.
Viva Las Vegas, part II: The Big West tournament will be held in Las Vegas for the second year in a row, but this time in a new location… after playing in the Michelob ULTRA Arena at the Mandalay Bay Resort, the conference tournament will be held at the Dollar Loan Center near Henderson in March 2022… this will be the first event ever to be held in the brand new facility.
