UFC President Dana White laughed at the possibility that Canelo Alvarez will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov or Jorge Masvidal in the near future.
It emerged in September that boxing’s biggest star had filed a lawsuit against his broadcaster DAZN, as well as his promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.
Canelo put his pen to paper on an eleven-fight, $ 365 million contract billed as the richest in sports history when he signed it less than two years ago.
The deal called for a $ 15 million tune-up fight against Rocky Fielding in December 2018, followed by ten fights for a guaranteed amount of $ 35 million each.
However, after just two more fights against Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev, problems began to arise.
It is claimed that DAZN tried to drastically reduce the guarantee ahead of Canelo’s next fight because – among other issues – they weren’t happy with the level of opposition they faced so far.
Dan Rafael reported that one of the central issues with the lawsuit was that the Mexican is “supposed to fight twice a year with at least one fight against a “premium” opponent. “
He explained that there was a serious dispute over what constitutes a “ premium ” enemy and said DAZN does not consider Jacobs or Kovalev to be appropriate.
According to Rafael, DAZN would consider Gennady Golovkin, Jorge Masvidal, Khabib Nurmagomedov and even De La Hoya, 47, to be “premium” opponents.
Hearing this report regarding his two fighters Khabib and Masvidal, UFC President White was puzzled.
“It’s really hilarious,” he said at a press conference.
“I don’t even know what to say to that, it’s hilarious.
“But are you shocked? This is the state of boxing, this is really where these guys are at.
“I don’t even know what to say to that.”
