Love it or hate it, Jake Paul continues to grab headlines everywhere.
Right now he’s talking about the fighting world after he punched Floyd Mayweather on Thursday, simply stealing his hat at a press conference for Money’s upcoming exhibition fight with his brother, Logan Paul.
Jake is 3-0 in professional boxing but has yet to face a real boxer. All of his opponents have been boxers for the first time so far, but his winning run captures the imagination with the public seemingly desperate to see him stopped.
The YouTuber, who has 23 million subscribers, claimed his latest victory by beating former UFC welterweight Ben Askren with a first round knockout.
However, UFC Hall of Fame member Michael Bisping revealed in an interview with lowkick.com that he was offered the fight first. He even got a contract.
“I was offered a contract. It wasn’t enough money, ”he said (transcribed by BJPenn.com). “They made an offer and it was a decent sum. But, if I’m going to make a fool of myself boxing a YouTuber, then I’d like a little more for that.
“I’m not going to come out of retirement, but it’s basically free money for me. If the number was big enough, then I’d be a fool not to go and get that money.
Interestingly, Askren raised $ 500,000 for the quick loss. Bisping doesn’t reveal how much he was offered, but one has to assume it was less than that.
“But I wasn’t chasing him,” Bisping explains. “And I think if anything, I think Jake was very smart. I think he just used me to try and make it look like he was looking for real challenges.
“Because we got an offer and we hit back with more than double that. And we never heard anything again, and then we found out he was fighting Ben Askren.
Although Paul has a knack for boring people, Bisping believes he was smart in taking his followers into the lucrative world of boxing.
“Everyone is trying to get ahead in life, and he’s been smart enough to take his YouTube account and turn it into a boxing career,” Bisping said.
“The guy is obviously passionate about sports.
“He trains very hard. He’s a hip guy. He knows how to piss people off and everybody’s pissed off, all that emotion, turning into dollars in the bank account.
Bisping, 42, apparently has no plans to return to the fight, but Paul is on the lookout for his next top scalp.
