What should you watch out for?
Familiar path for Milan
Two seasons ago Atalanta lost their first three group matches, drew the fourth, and then recorded back-to-back wins to sneak past. This quarter, the Italian team Milan have repeated those first five stages and could also have a nice breakaway with the second place still to be won in Group B. But it is a difficult request given that the Rossoneri have to beat Liverpool – who won their first five matches of a group campaign for the first time – then hope for a draw between second-placed Porto and Atlético.
Modrić to join club 100
Luka Modrić will become the 43rd player to reach 100 Champions League appearances if he plays in Real Madrid’s pole position battle against Inter on Tuesday. The Croatian playmaker may have a long way to go to catch up with teammate Toni Kroos (119) but he will be desperate to line up alongside his midfielder partner, especially if the German can reiterate his contribution from Matchday 5 scorer – the Merengues have won 23 of the 24 games Kroos has scored in.
Xavi hopes to avoid repeated elimination
You have to go back to the 2000/01 season for the last time Barcelona failed to successfully navigate the group stage; however, the danger of elimination has never been greater than it is today. Xavi Hernández – then 20 years old – was among the last Blaugrana side to suffer this fate and their new manager will know that a win at Bayern will be needed to progress if their rivals Benfica eliminate the last club Dynamo Kyiv in the other. Group E match.
Full team of contenders in Group G
The last time all four teams in a Champions League group hoped to qualify for Matchday 6 was in 2009/10, so the Group G scenario is certainly rare. However, the solution is simple for the quartet – the current top two LOSC and Salzburg only have to avoid defeat while pursuers Sevilla and Wolfsburg need to win to make the last 16.
