The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage draw will take place in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday 25 August and will be broadcast live from 18:00 CET.

Which teams will line up in the group stage draw?

The draw will feature 32 teams – the 26 automatic qualifiers and the six play-off winners.

The roster is subject to final confirmation by UEFA.

How the Champions League group stage draw works

  • The draw includes 32 teams: 26 teams directly qualified for the group stage and the six winners of the play-offs.
  • The teams will be divided into four ranking pots. Pot 1 will be made up of the holders, UEFA Europa League winners and champions of the six top-ranked nations who did not qualify via one of the 2021/22 titles; Pots 2 to 4 will be determined by the club’s coefficient ranking.
  • In the case of associations with two representatives, the clubs will be paired in order to distribute their matches between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In the case of associations with four representatives, two pairings will be made. These pairings should be based on TV audiences.
  • No team may play against a team from its own association. Any other restrictions will be announced before the draw.

What happens next?

Matches will be confirmed after the draw of a group stage which will be contracted over an eight-week period this fall due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16.

The third-placed teams in each group advance to the UEFA Europa League knockout stage, where they will face the UEFA Europa League group runners-up for the Round of 16.
