GOALKEEPERS
Chelsea were the only side to keep a clean sheet on Matchday 9, knocking out the 2-0 winners against Porto which meant that Edouard Mendy (5.3 M €) continued his incredible statistics. In his eight UEFA Champions League appearances this season, the Senegalese striker has conceded only once – against Krasnodar on Matchday 6 – and he remains #UCLfantasy top goalkeeper with 49 points. With Chelsea protecting a lead in the second leg, siding with Mendy seems like the smart move.
If you are looking elsewhere, Keylor Navas (€ 5.6m) is somewhat of a lifesaving magnet with the Parisian goalkeeper having made 44 during the competition – more than any of his contemporaries. Costa Rica made an incredible ten saves against Bayern in the first leg, and if the second leg goes that way, they could be in line for more #UCLfantasy points.
Despite conceding against Dortmund on Matchday 9, Manchester City Ederson (6.0 million euros) remains a viable option having already kept six clean sheets in the UEFA Champions League this season, with the Brazilian only second behind Mendy in #UCLfantasy points among goalkeepers.
DEFENDERS
The managers who stocked up on Chelsea’s defensive assets on Matchday 9 will have reaped the rewards of the clean sheet against Porto and there will be an even bigger race to get them ahead of the return leg. Ben Chilwell (5.2 million euros) was the star of the series with his 13 point draw, the highest Fantasy total of any player in the first leg, César Azpilicueta (€ 5.2m), Antonio Rüdiger (4.7 million euros) and Andreas Christensen (5.2 million euros) all posted satisfactory returns on seven points.
With clean sheets at a premium at this point in the competition, focusing on defenders with attacking potential could be the way to go for Matchday 10. Trent Alexander-Arnold (€ 6.8m) and João Cancelo (6.1 million euros) Manchester City are the most successful fantasy defenders alongside Porto Zaidu (5.3 M €), and they’re going to be worth the financial expense if they keep their promise. Bayern Benjamin Pavard (4.9 M €) and captain of Paris Marquinhos (5.9 million euros) – if injuries allow – are also worth considering in this area after the return of the attackers recorded on Matchday 9.
MIDFIELDS
From Real Madrid Vinícius Júnior (€ 7.9 million) is sure to see his ownership increase after his two goals against Liverpool in the first leg. The Brazilian racked up more fantasy points (12) than any other midfielder on Matchday 9 and he will be a sought-after asset heading into the return leg at Anfield. Owners of Mohamed Salah (€ 11.8m) is also hoping their man will hit the net again, with the Egyptian having now scored in each of the last four UEFA Champions League games at Liverpool.
Chelsea Mount Mason (€ 6.9 million) is a fit man at the moment, the England international having scored in three of his last four club and country appearances, but it was not until Matchday 9 to score his first goal in club competition at the UEFA. This helps explain its modest 5% ownership, but the astute managers of #UCLfantasy know about a differential diamond when they see one and Mount certainly falls into that category.
Manchester City pair Kevin De Bruyne (€ 11.3m) and Phil Foden (€ 7.1m) will deservedly receive a lot of attention ahead of the return matches, but the Croatian veteran Luka Modrić (7.8 million euros) continues to run with consistent returns. The Real Madrid player has averaged 6.6 fantasy points per game in his last five UEFA Champions League appearances.
BEFORE
Already one of the most popular choices of the #UCLfantasy frontlines, Kylian Mbappé (€ 11.1 million) is an even hotter property now after his brace going to Bayern. The Frenchman is in devastating form in the competition, hitting the net eight times in the last four UEFA Champions League games in Paris, and now only Erling Haaland (€ 11.2m) has racked up more Fantasy Points among forwards at this point. Mbappé’s teammate Neymar (€ 11.6m) It’s also an extremely attractive option as the Brazilian’s two assists on Matchday 9 have taken him to eight attacking returns in his last four European appearances.
Those who like a forward budget will have been happy to see Bayern Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (€ 6.6m) among the goals of the 9th day and he could well lead the line again on the 10th day given the continued absence of Robert Lewandowski.
It was somewhat surprising that Karim Benzema (€ 10.4m) was not directly involved in any of Real Madrid’s three goals against Liverpool in the first leg, but the Frenchman remains a huge threat and, having scored twice on his last visit to Anfield in 2014, is well placed to add to the five goals he has already scored in the UEFA Champions League this season.
