Two men have been arrested after the Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger has become the latest player to be hit by an object thrown by fans.
The 28-year-old had objects thrown at him by Tottenham fans in the second half of the Blues’ 2-0 win.
The German star was seen wielding a lighter to referee Paul Tierney.
The Metropolitan Police issued a statement about the incident.
“Two men suspected of throwing objects from the stands during Chelsea’s game against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge have been arrested. They have been taken into custody,” a spokesperson told Sky Sports News.
“Investigations, in conjunction with Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC, are underway to identify anyone else involved in the throwing of objects during the match.”
The German didn’t suffer any serious damage but the increase in Premier League fan disorder is alarming.
The weekend also saw former Everton player Lucas Digne hit by a bottle in Aston Villa’s win at Goodison Park.
And Rudiger’s manager, Thomas Tuchel wants fans to show respect and protect the mood of English football.
He said: “I’m not worried, but you’re right, I sent the message to our fans – support us, we like to have them close to the pitch, we like a bright atmosphere and that they are not behind fences or netting.
“From there, everyone has to show respect. But in general I am not concerned. Right now, I’m enjoying the vibe.
“If this is a new trend, we need to act together to make sure it stops as soon as possible, to protect England’s fantastic environment and unique atmosphere.”
And after the incident, Tuchel said: “I just heard about it a few minutes ago, but I didn’t realize it during the game.
“I thought maybe something was up with his opponent. I have no information.
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte also added: “Honestly, I didn’t see what happened.”
