Two Bronze Medals in International Race for Maple Ridge Cyclist – Maple Ridge News

Maggie Coles-Lyster won two bronze medals over the weekend as the Maple Ridge cyclist competed in the UCI Champions League in London, England.

The cycling series had five rounds, with the final two taking place in the British capital on Friday and Saturday. Each day, Coles-Lyster won bronze in the elimination race. It’s a thrilling endurance event, which sees the last rider on each lap knocked out of the race, until only one remains.

Those results left her tied for third place overall in the women’s endurance series, with Norway’s Anita Stenberg. Both women had 110 points.

“New friendships, fast bike races, lots of people, exciting results. I came away with a bronze medal overall and made a fierce battle out of it until the final race,” Coles-Lyster said on his Instagram post.

Coles-Lyster, the Canadian road race champion for 2022, is no stranger to the podium and also won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games scratch race this year.

The first races of the UCI Champions League series of his year took place in Spain, Germany and France. There were 5,500 fans in attendance at London’s Lee Valley VeloPark for the final event. It’s a rising series, and each of the four champions left with 25,000 euros. The new series offers short-format races, featuring the best international cyclists and aiming to attract a large broadcast audience.

Coles-Lyster finished fourth overall in women’s endurance in 2021, the Champions League’s first year.

“The 2022 UCI Track Cycling Champions League has been a fascinating series with so many intriguing battles in each of the four competitions. There were a lot of uncertainties and changes of leaders every week until the final,” said Gilles Peruzzi, head of track cycling at the UCI.

“As well as the thrilling race, I was especially pleased to see the true commitment and competitiveness of the riders as well as the people of all ages who cheered them on throughout the five rounds. It is clear to me that this competition innovative and accessible raises the profile of track cycling to a whole new level, and we’re confident it will inspire people around the world to keep following this exciting sport.
