MINNEAPOLIS, September 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Twin Cities Film Fest unveiled its full 2022 film catalog on Thursday, revealing over 140 films that will screen October 20-29 in a hybrid format. Now in her 13e year, the festival’s in-person program will once again return to the Showplace ICON Theaters and Kitchen at The Shops at West End, with some 80 screenings taking place at the St. Louis Park venue. Over 100 films will debut simultaneously online through the TCFF STREAMS platform at www.twincitiesfilmfest.org.
Widely known for balancing award contenders from top festivals and studios with groundbreaking new visions of Minnesota and Midwestern Filmmakers, TCFF organizers said the nonprofit plans to expand its lineup of distinctive series and showcases this year. Audiences in 2022 will experience an eclectic and critically acclaimed mix of independent features, cutting-edge shorts and provocative documentaries with a particular focus on Minnesota-connected productions, BIPOC voices, filmmakers and this year’s “Changemaker Series”, highlighting projects that frame and address the pressing issue of climate change.
“We believe in the power of film. It has become the mantra of the Twin Cities Film Fest – and again this year, as we have seen the resilience of filmmakers and audiences to emerge from the pandemic, we have been overwhelmed with the originality and artistry on display in the hundreds and hundreds of submissions that have flooded our desk,” said TCFF Executive Director Jatin Setia. “Nothing provokes discussion or evokes empathy more successfully than film, and in this year’s diverse visions, we hope audiences will feel transported – to different places, to different lives, with a deeper understanding of the world we all live in.”
MGM’s Orion Pictures and United Artists Releasing Until is expected to open the festival on Thursday, October 20telling the story of Grandma Till Mobley and her quest for justice for her 14-year-old son Issue up towho was lynched in 1955 while visiting his cousins Mississippi. Director At Chinonye Chukwu masterful visuals convey Up to Mobley immeasurable dedication and endless commitment and love for his son. TCFF will honor Deborah and Teri Watts (The Emmett Till Legacy Foundation) with the first Empower Award during the post-movie discussion. This year, the closing gala will take place on Saturday October 29and will celebrate Empire of Light (Projector), by Sam Mendes drama starring Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, Michael Wardand Toby Jones. Set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, the film is a powerful and poignant story about human connection – and the magic of cinema. Universal Images’ She saysrealized by Maria Schraderis this year’s Spotlight Selection and will air October 27. Based on New York Times investigation and bestselling book, the film tells how two journalists uncovered the story that helped propel the #MeToo movement and broke decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood.
Between these tentpoles, TCFF will showcase projects related to “Climate Action: Food and Fashion”, the official cause of this year’s “Changemaker Series”. The acclaimed documentary will be screened on the opening night of the festival Overheatedrealized by Yassa Khan and featuring Billie Eilish, Finneas, Yungblud and Girl in Red, among others. The film is partly produced by Maggie Bairdmother of Billie Eilish and Finneas, who will attend the festival alongside a nationally acclaimed entertainer and local philanthropist Stephanie Dillon, both recipients of the 2022 TCFF Changemaker Award. The duo will also be joined by key staff from Baird’s non-profit Support & Feed, the official TCFF Changemaker Partner. TCFF will also renew its partnership with St. Louis Park based on Rem 5 VR Lab for an immersive overnight VR/XR experience October 25.
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will go to the acclaimed actor Chris Mulkeywho will be present with his new film The hand that feeds on Saturday October 22. Jeremy Davis will receive the Northstar Award for his film Bitcoindirected by filmmaker MN Matt Osterman on friday 21 octoberst.
