Tuned 2006 Ford GT blasts V8 music through Germany in Autobahn Run

It’s been a while since the first Ford GT took center stage to mark the company’s centenary celebration in 2003. Two decades after the first pre-production cars were presented to the public, the American supercar is always a sight to behold. Of the more than 4,000 units produced in 2005 and 2006, one example took to the unrestricted sections of the German autobahn to sing its V8 tune. You know what happens next.

AutoTopNL hosted this attempt at high-speed racing on the highway. It failed to hit the mark, but that sonic V8 sure turned a few heads in the attempt.

The Ford GT in its production form is not a slow car. The all-aluminum 5.4-liter V8 engine produces 550 horsepower (410 kilowatts) and 500 pound-feet (678 Newton-meters) of torque. These power outputs are good for a sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 3.8 seconds; the double requires 12.3 seconds. Top speed is rated at 205 mph (330 km/h).

But it’s not an original Ford GT. According to the video, it has already gone through the Stage 1 tuning, which increased the power slightly to 600 hp (447 kW). This increase in production did not seem to affect performance, however.

Unfortunately, the top-speed racing video above only showed the Ford GT reaching around 180 mph (290 kph). That’s a bit short of what the supercar can achieve, although many factors could have affected this failed attempt.

Nevertheless, the Ford GT here again showed us that it is still capable of incredible speeds. Even better, it’s nice to see these prized cars pushed to their limits once in a while and not just kept in a garage somewhere.
