Tua Tagovailoa named Dolphins captain for the first time; Tyreek Hill also picks up the honor for the 2022 season

The Dolphins have spent big to surround quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with more talent this offseason. New coach Mike McDaniel has put special emphasis on testing to unlock the “bravado” of the former first draft pick. And now, as 2022 approaches, the QB’s teammates have rallied behind him as well. miami announced Thursday that Tagovailoa will be one of the team’s seven elected captains this season, along with McDaniel tell reporters that the young QB was the “overwhelming” winner in terms of votes received.

It is the first time in Tagovailoa’s three seasons in the NFL that he will be team captain. The designation comes a year after the QB was notably absent from the Dolphins’ captaincy roster, despite then-coach Brian Flores repeatedly backing Tagovailoa as the face of the franchise. ProFootballTalk suggested that Tagovailoa had in fact rejected an opportunity to captain in 2021, knowing that the team was then pursuing Texas QB Deshaun Watson via trade, but this has not been confirmed.

McDaniel singled out Tagovailoa as a growth leader heading into 2022, saying “The Dan Le Batard showThis summer he sought to rebuild the QB’s confidence after two mercurial first seasons in the NFL.

Other Dolphins captains in 2022 are star receiver Tyreek Hill, who is expected to serve as Tagovailoa’s primary target after arriving via trade from the Chiefs; offensive tackle Terron Armstead; defensive tackle Christian Wilkins; linebacker Elandon Roberts; cornerback Xavien Howard; and security Jevon Holland.
