Former President Donald Trump is trying to prevent his tax returns from being released to Democrats in Congress.
In a petition filed in federal court on Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers say the demands of the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Committee are not “valid control requests.”
“The primary purpose of the requests is to obtain and expose stakeholder information for the purpose of exposure, to inappropriately conduct law enforcement, or for some other impermissible purpose – not to study federal law. “, reads the motion in a 37-page document. deposit. “The requests are irrelevant to legislation which is within the competence of the Committee and constitutionally valid.”
Trump’s lawyers say the Democratic-led House committee’s efforts are simply political, saying the goal “is to expose the private tax information of an individual – President Trump – for political gain.”
“The demands target President Trump because he is a Republican and a political opponent. campaigns, ”the lawyers said.
The move comes days after the Justice Department said the Treasury Department “must provide” Trump’s taxes to the committee and had “sufficient” legislative reasons for the information. This included “serious concerns” about how the Internal Revenue Service, which reports to the Treasury Department, carried out tax audits of presidents.
The Justice Department’s decision was to quash a 2019 memo issued under the Trump administration, denying the request.
Legal deposit is the latest chapter in the fight for Trump to file his tax returns. This could mean that any exit, if it occurs, could take months or even years.
Trump is the first major party presidential candidate in more than 40 years not to free his taxes.
In February, the Manhattan district attorney obtained the files as part of a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization.
