The 2022 Toyota Tundra has arrived, giving the truck a much-needed new generation after the previous iteration from the 2007 model year with just a few upgrades along the way. Designing a replacement was a major undertaking for the team at Toyota’s Calty Design research center. Calty President Kevin Hunter offered a few TheDetroitBureau.com.
For example, Hunter explains why the Tundra doesn’t have a multi-function tailgate, like the different versions of the Chevrolet Silverado or Ram trucks. “This is mainly because our customers use our trucks to transport simple things like bikes and ATVs. We are targeting a leisure market, not a job market,” he said.
This explanation is not perfect, however. There is no reason why there shouldn’t be a multi-function tailgate with features that specifically make it easier to carry recreational equipment.
Hunter also provided some details on why the new Tundra looks like it is. The design team wanted to make the truck sturdier because “nobody wants a lousy truck on the boat launch or hauling their motorhome to a camp. You want to look tough, strong and capable and it’s part of the attitude to drive a truck, ”he said.
Inside, the design team consciously tried to make the lids of the air vents look similar in style to the grille. Also, they started to create the top tier trim booths first, so some of the parts could appear in the lower grades and make them look better.
Toyota is currently working on the next-gen Tacoma, and Hunter is hinting that it has design similarities to the new Tundra. “There’s going to be, I think, a good connection between Tundra and Tacoma,” he said.
The new Tundra arrives in showrooms before the end of 2021. Pricing is not yet available, but the general belief is that the cost is not expected to change drastically from the current truck.
