It’s finally happening! After much speculation, Toyota is officially teasing the GR Corolla hot hatch for the United States. Unfortunately, the image does not provide much detail about the vehicle.
The folks at the GR Corolla Forum noticed the Easter eggs hidden in Toyota’s Instagram post. First, the time at the top right of the speedometer shows G16. This is a reference to the 1.6-liter G16E-GTS turbo three-cylinder engine that powers the GR Yaris.
Then the route on the navigation system is GR Four. This is the sophisticated all-wheel drive system.
In addition, what is visible on the air conditioning display shows “268”. The number refers to the 268 horsepower (200 kilowatts) like the GR Yaris produced in Japan. The European version of this hot hatch has 257 hp (192 kW).
Finally, squint on the right side of the image to see a small GR corolla camouflaged on the road. It is so small that we cannot discern any detail beyond the vehicle having a hatchback body.
It should be noted that this image is an existing Corolla photo and the company is adding these hidden details to the image. This means that the cabin shown here is not that of a real GR Corolla.
Rumors about a GR Corolla have been circulating since the early days of the GR Yaris. Toyota even fanned the flames in a tweet that read, “While GR Yaris isn’t hitting the states … maybe it’s time the US had a hot hatch to take ownership.”
The main information is that the Corolla GR will arrive in late 2022. Hopefully we don’t have to go through a year of teasers before Toyota finally tells us all the details. Earlier reports suggest it could make up to 296bhp (221hp). kW) from an optimized version of the 1.6-liter three-cylinder. Although this new teaser image suggests otherwise.
