Toronto-born Heather Russell rose to the challenge on Sunday’s “American Idol” – she sang a Katy Perry song in front of Katy Perry.
Russell, now 20, who was signed to Simon Cowell at the age of 10, has released a unique version of Perry’s 2020 track “Harleys In Hawaii”.
However, while all the judges insisted the singer has a fantastic voice, they gave her constructive criticism in that she didn’t yet know how to use it.
“You’re one of the best singers I’ve heard this year,” Bryan said, telling her to “watch out for all the stuff”.

“I have never in my life witnessed a voice that was in total control. I mean, it’s just phenomenal, ”Richie said.
Perry, on the other hand, was a bit harsher. She said Russell was all iced out and no cake at the moment, but added, “You have the best voice in the world. You just have to learn how to use it. As funny as it sounds, I felt dead inside.
