In his most recent role as Elvis‘Tom Parker, Tom Hanks has been described as playing “probably the most insufferable movie character ever conceived”, “a creepy glow with sharp eyes” and, in our review, giving a performance that “maintains a constant veneer of menace and unworthiness”. Perhaps eager to step out and demonstrate that he, the real man, is still friendly and charming, the actor seems to be using his promotional appearances to not only talk about his latest film, but to tell personal stories that show how he is the same old affable Hanks we have known and loved for a long time.
Last night Late Night with Seth Meyersfor example, Hanks past one of its segments talk about his story as one of the most likely famous actors to show up at a stranger’s wedding.
After Meyers describes his guest as “a man who will show up to a wedding guest or not,” Hanks finds himself on a trip down memory lane where he describes some of the times when, as he jokingly describes, his uncontrolled ego l led him to inject himself into other people’s big days.
Hanks begins with when he attended a wedding in Rome after running into the party during filming one of those Dan Brown movies. Having accidentally developed a taste for the practice, he then found himself involved in marriage after marriage. We’re shown Hanks and a massive Pittsburgh wedding party he stumbled into on his way to “the biggest cocktail cruise bus I’ve ever seen” and him earlier this year when he ended up becoming an ordained minister thanks to a request from a couple who lived next door to where he was shooting a movie – a story we covered when it happened.
Once this subject is covered, Hanks then decides to focus more and rent the city of Pittsburgh for the rest of the Late at night segment, endearing itself to its residents. Hopefully in future talk show appearances he will continue this trend and discuss exactly what he likes about each city in the world, one by one, until each specific market has been properly covered.
